4) Rainbow Science

What you need

  • Liquid Rainbow Kit 
  • Water*

Step by step

1. Fill one cup (Cup A) with water. 

2. Empty the packet of salt into Cup A and stir evenly. 

3. Pour half the mixture into another cup (Cup B). 

4. With the mixture in Cup B, fill it with water. 

5. Fill half of the last cup (Cup C) with water only. 

6. Drop the red colouring into Cup A, yellow colouring into Cup B, and blue colouring into Cup C. 

7. Using the dropper, transfer all the liquid in Cup A into the bottle slowly, followed by Cup B, and lastly, Cup C. 

8. Screw on the cover. 

9. Your liquid rainbow is complete! 

  • Observe how the different colours are separated in the bottle. 
  • What sequence are the colours in? 
  • Why do you think they are able to be separated that way, and not be mixed together? 

 

     

     

    What you need

    • Tall cup** 
    • Measuring cups** 
    • Stirrer**
    • Food colouring** (Red, Blue, and Yellow) 
    • Cooking oil*

    Step by step

    1. Pour 40ml of cooking oil into a measuring cup . 

    2. Add in the red, blue, and yellow food colouring (5 drops each), and mix evenly with the stirrer. 

    3. Using another measuring cup, measure 300ml of water and pour it into the tall cup. 

    4. Slowly pour the cooking oil mixture into the tall cup. 

    5. Wait for 10 seconds. Do not blink! It will soon start to rain in the cup!
