Make a Balloon Rocket

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... the rocket balloon! Try out this activity with things you can find in your home. Learn about what makes the balloon zoom and extend the activity by having a race!

What you need

Balloon

Straw

String

Tape

 

Step by step

1) Create the setup shown in the photo below.

2) If you are trying this at home, tie the ends of the string to furniture of the same height, or simply get your children to stand apart to hold the ends of the string. Make sure it is taut.

3) When you are ready, let go of the balloon and watch it go. 

Learn

As air is let out of the balloon, it creates a forward motion called thrust. Different size of balloons create different levels of thrust. In a real rocket, the thrust is created when the engines blast down. The rocket then shoots up! 

For the older children

Create an experiment to find out how the size of the balloon affects the speed of your balloon rocket and how far it can fly.
