Step by Step

  1.  Before starting this activity, lay the activity area with newspapers in case of any leakage.
  2. Arrange the materials in the order shown. Remember to lay filter paper before adding quartz sand, activated carbon and porcelain sand.
  3. Ensure that the different components are secured tightly above one another to prevent leaks.
  4. Collect some muddy water and slowly pour it into the funnel. Observe the water that is collected at the bottom.

The layers of the filtration system are arranged in order of size. The bigger sized gravel help to filter out large sediments, like leaves or insects, while sand is used to remove fine impurities. The activated charcoal removes contaminants through chemical absorption.
